The Hexapla was a synopsis of Old Testament versions: the Hebrew and a transliteration, the Septuagint (an authoritative Greek version of the Old Testament), the versions of Aquila, Symmachus, and Theodotion and, for the Psalms, two further translations (one being discovered by him in a jar Book of the Wars of Yahweh.
Additional Information. The first edition wasthe secondof this 2-volume work. This consists of all the fragments (known in the 19th century) of Origen's Hexapla, a 3rd century parallel collation of Greek versions of the Old Testament books. It is estimated that the Hexapla consisted of over 6, pages, and that due to its large size was not : For confirmation of the layout of the codex page openings of the Hexapla we depend upon later evidence: two early manuscript fragments that survived.
The first is a palimpsest from the Cairo Genizah in which the 8th century Greek text of a portion of the Psalms in the columnar form of the Hexapla was overwritten in Hebrew.
This leaf, preserved at Cambridge, was first reproduced. It is doubtful that the entirety of the Hexapla ever existed in more than a single copy simultaneously. The fragments we have are copies, which in the course of events were themselves corrupted by erroneous copying of Origen’s sigla (!).
